Can Veiled Chameleons Eat Crickets? Safety, Prep & Frequency

Safe — OccasionallyFeeding frequency: weekly

Crickets are the single most recommended staple feeder insect for veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and can make up the majority of their insect diet year-round. Always gut-load for 24–48 hours and dust with calcium before every feeding to offset crickets' poor calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.

How to Prepare

  1. Gut-load crickets for 24–48 hours before feeding: offer dark leafy greens (collard greens, mustard greens), orange squash, and a small carrot to maximize nutritional transfer to your chameleon.
  2. Size-match the cricket to the chameleon: the cricket's body length should not exceed the width between the animal's eyes. Juvenile veiled chameleons (under 6 months) need ¼-inch pinhead crickets; adults accept 1-inch full-grown crickets.
  3. Dust lightly with calcium (no D3) at every feeding session, and substitute calcium-with-D3 powder on two feedings per month. Over-supplementing D3 causes hypervitaminosis, so never dust with D3 at every meal.
  4. Introduce crickets via a cup or chameleon-safe feeding zone — loose crickets hiding in foliage can stress the animal and may bite sleeping chameleons; remove all uneaten crickets within 20 minutes.
  5. Offer food during the first 2–3 hours after the basking lamp activates. Veiled chameleons hunt visually when warm; feeding cold animals risks impaction and refusal.

FAQ

How many crickets should a veiled chameleon eat per day?
Juveniles (under 6 months) can eat 10–15 small crickets daily to support rapid growth. Sub-adults and adults do better on 5–8 appropriately sized crickets every other day, rotating with other feeders like dubia roaches or hornworms to prevent dietary monotony and nutritional gaps.
Can veiled chameleons eat dead or freeze-dried crickets?
No. Veiled chameleons are obligate visual hunters triggered by movement. Dead or freeze-dried insects will almost universally be ignored, and freeze-dried versions lose significant moisture and nutrient content. Stick to live, gut-loaded crickets.
Do I need to gut-load if I buy crickets from a pet store?
Yes, always. Commercial pet-store crickets are typically kept on low-nutrient grain and cardboard. A 24–48 hour gut-load on fresh greens and orange vegetables immediately before feeding dramatically increases the nutritional value transferred to your chameleon.
Can crickets harm my veiled chameleon?
Yes, if left unattended. Loose crickets will chew on a sleeping or shedding chameleon, causing open wounds that can become infected. Always remove uneaten feeders promptly and never leave crickets in the enclosure overnight.
Are crickets alone a complete diet for a veiled chameleon?
No. While crickets form an excellent dietary base, veiled chameleons thrive on feeder variety. Rotating in dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), silkworms, and occasional hornworms provides a broader amino acid and micronutrient profile and prevents prey-item fixation.
